Jackie White

About the Author

Jackie White studied German in secondary school and went on to gain a Bachelor of Arts Honours Degree from the University of Exeter.  She completed an additional year at St. Luke’s College to gain her Post Graduate Certificate in Education, specialising in Modern Languages, majoring in German.

After completing teacher training she joined the Royal Air Force as a language specialist.  Based in Germany, teaching pilots, air attachés and engineers enough German to fulfil their jobs.  Her trademark first lesson was to teach the words, “Mein Freund bezahlt”, which means “My friend’s paying”.  She was also selected to interpret for NATO.  After leaving the Air Force, Jackie went on to establish a successful business career implementing learning development strategies for luxury motor manufacturers.

Jackie relies on her teenage son’s playlist to keep up with the music scene.  A chance viewing of Slipknot’s MTV Top 10 hits, which included the song ‘Sonne’ by their German friends Rammstein led to her becoming a devoted fan of the band, and an avid admirer of Till Lindemann’s lyrics.

When Rammstein were playing in Madison Square Garden in December 2010, Jackie had to be there and promptly contacted her sister in New York to arrange the purchase of two tickets.  After translating the songs for her sister she realised there were lots of other fans out there who were relying on literal translations, which lacked the beauty of the rhyme and rhythm of the original songs.

Jackie drew on her extensive knowledge of all things German to write the Little Black Rammbook.  It is written in plain English for those who know little about the language or culture and explains and translates what some of their well known songs mean.
